NEIC promotes educational and professional excellence in all areas of chemistry through its Awards Dinner which will be held at Brandies University on Thursday, April 23, 2009.  For more than 30 years NEIC has honored graduating college seniors from colleges and universities in New England who are recipients of the national AIC student award.  In addition to receiving a certificate, the awardees are given a complimentary, one-year student membership in AIC. In 1994, NEIC initiated the Secondary School Award.  An outstanding high school teacher from each New England state is given an engraved plaque at the banquet. Also at the banquet the Distinguished Chemist Award is presented to an outstanding member of the academic, business, or government chemical community in New England who is the keynote speaker at the event.

NEIC was also involved in an outreach program for inner city high school students sponsored by a grant from the National Science Foundation to Northeastern University. NEIC has collaborated with the Summerfest program of the New England Section of the American Chemical Society and has hosted AIC national meetings in Boston.

NEIC is a local section of the parent organization, the American Institute of Chemists (AIC).  AIC members in the six New England states form the NEIC section. Formed in 1923, AIC is a non-profit professional organization with particular emphasis on promoting the relevance of the chemical profession and its practitioners to society. AIC national meetings include technical sessions and an awards program for its national award recipients. It also has the only professional certification program for chemists and chemical engineers.

The official publication of AIC is The Chemist, an online publication featuring news of the Institute, technical articles on a broad range of topics, and reviews of the latest product and books in the field.

AIC has eight local institutes.  The New England, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. institutes each hold an annual student award banquet. AIC has its office in the Chemical Heritage Foundation building in Philadelphia. More information is available at its website: www.theaic.org
